This is an exquisite circa 1870 Sioux strike-a-lite beaded bag purchased from Sherwoods Spirit of America Mike Kokin in 1998 and from the Stephen Johnston collection. The bag is comprised of Indian tanned Buffalo Bison hide that is sinew sewn and adorned with period correct glass trade seed beads atop a thick parfleche rawhide back of Buffalo hide. A copy of the invoice where Stephen Johnston purchased from bag, #4092 from Sherwoods Spirit of American, owned by Mike Kokin, for $2,200 in August 24, 1998. It was noted in Sherwoods catalog as circa 1870 Sioux Sinew-Sewn on Buffalo Hide on page 27 #4092. The beadwork shows a geometric pattern with sinew sewn period glass trade seed beads in chalk white, medium blue, greasy yellow, red white heart and cobalt. The bottom has a row of rolled tin jingle dangle cones. The bag has excellent original patina and is well kept with little to no bead loss. Provenance: From the Stephen Johnston collection formerly from Darby, Montana and Foster City, CA; purchased from Sherwoods Spirit of America Mike Kokin (1936-2015) for $2,200 in August 1998 #4092 (previous member of The Authentic Tribal Art Dealers Association (ATADA). A copy of the invoice and the Sherwoods catalog page showing the bags picture is included. The bag measures 5.25 inches long by 4 inches wide. Strike-a-lite / strike a lite.
