This is an amazing all original matching circa 1879 J & E Stevens Co. Black Americana Cast Iron Mechanical Toy titled, “I Always Did ‘Spise A Mule”. This is a real authentic original piece showing matching and correct manufacture and markings and wonderful paint. Designed and patented by James H. Bowen and manufactured and distributed by J & E. Stevens, it was one of Stevens most popular mechanical banks as it was a very attractive toy with excellent action and subject matter. It is popular with collectors today for the same reasons that it was popular with children and adults alike when it was originally marketed. The toy features the figure of a young Black boy seated behind a horse that rearing back. The action has the boy fall over backwards when the horse is turned clockwise Similar designs were used for banks as well. Much of the original red, brown, blue and green paint remains, though it's unknown if the yellow paint is original. Toy is in good overall condition, , no breakage or damage noted, measures 3"W x 10"L x 6.5"H
