Featured in this lot is this 1920s hand-tinted, sepia-toned photo of Pikes Peak in Colorado taken from Monument Park by Mary C. Whitney. The photograph was taken next to a lake and features nice easy colors with snow capped Pikes Peak in the middle background of the photo. Hand-tinting is the tactile method of altering traditional, darkroom-generated prints. Colorists used cotton swabs to manually apply pigments —usually translucent oils but sometimes dyes or even tempera. Fine details were added with a stylus, pin, or oil pencils, while sepia toning is a chemical process that converts the metallic silver in the emulsion of a photographic print into a silver sulfide compound. This changes the color of the resulting image and makes the photo more resistant to environmental pollutants, helping photos hold up over time. Beneath the photo it reads, "Pikes Peak from Monument Park" and is signed, "Mary C. Whitney" in pencil. The photo is set behind a hard plastic cover in a painted wooden frame. The frame shows good condition on the front with slight wear from age, while the back is in fair condition with tape peeling from the backside. The photo is in good condition. The photo measures 7 1/4" L x 9 1/4" W. The entire piece measures 14 1/2" L x 17 1/4" W.
