The lot features a fantastic and early pipe bag from the Sioux with beautiful quill and beadwork dating to circa 1870. The lot features an Indian tanned hide sinew sewn bag with yellow ocher / ochre mineral pigment painted bag showing porcupine quill quillwork and beadwork. The bag shows typical early Sioux geometric beadwork showing colors of greasy green, red white heart, chalk white, chalk white, and blue. The beadwork has intricate designs and is well kept. The fringe show parfleche rawhide strips which are wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork with natural dyes of red, yellow, purple, blue and natural cream / white. The yellow ocher on the body also extends to the fringes. The bag is well kept and displays beautifully.
Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses. Measures overall 32 1/2" x 7 3/4" measurements with fringe.
