Featured in this lot is this R. Roggan vs. Virgil Earp court document circa 1879; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The court document is handwritten and numbered #649 and is a Civil matter between R. Roggan and Virgil Earp about 3 tons of corn bought for a sum of $100.00 as witnesses by H.C. Casey and Ed Adam in 1879. Virgil Walter Earp (July 18, 1843 – October 19, 1905) was an American lawman. He was both deputy U.S. Marshal and City Marshal of Tombstone, Arizona, when he led his younger brothers Wyatt and Morgan, and Doc Holliday, in a confrontation with outlaw Cowboys at the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881. They killed brothers Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton. All three Earp brothers had been the target of repeated death threats made by the Cowboys who were upset by the Earps' interference in their illegal activities. All four lawmen were charged with murder by Ike Clanton, who had run from the gunfight. During a month-long preliminary hearing, Judge Wells Spicer exonerated the men, concluding they had been performing their duty. The condition of this official court document is well preserved with some fading to the note written to the right of the headline and shows some browning to the page consistent with its age but otherwise shows a well preserved.
