This is a fabulous an early circa 1890-1915 Navajo Ganado Hubbell Trading Post large rug from a Denver collection and ex-Hindman / Cowan’s. This is an early, original Hubbell Trading Post Ganado that is considered a “pound” rug, which refers to rugs that were sold by the Navajo’s by the weight, with this being a heavy and thick, tightly woven example. Ganado patterns incorporated both Greek and Persian motifs and was established by Lorenzo Hubbell in 1878 at Ganado, Arizona where is trading post was located. The rug shows a rare and impressive large size with handspun wool having many natural dyes. The rug shows a stepped pattern bordering the dark border with cream inner border with two stretches of stepped red, black and grey geometric design. At the center shows the iconic Ganado stepped inner design flanked on the top and bottom with diamond patterns with hour glass designs. The rug shows a heavy nice thickness with tight impressive weave, various examples of Navajo lazy lines can be seen throughout the rug, an early weaving feature, as well as much variation in the wool yarns color, indicating hand dying and natural dying. Interestingly the bottom diamond is slightly off center. Provenance: From a Denver, Colorado collection and from the ex-sales of Hindman / Cowan’s auction. The rug is very well kept with little to no bleed or color loss, tight weave with little to no weave loss or wear, the bottom edge shows a very small imperfection. Measures 71-inches by 52-inches.
