This is a fabulous circa 1890-1900 Central Plains porcupine hair roach from an ex-Bonhams Skinner auction. The roach is comprised of porcupine hair, porcupine quill and deer hair with yellow and red mineral pigment ocher / ochre dye paints; and the inside layers showing teal and orange ochre mineral pigment paint, along with the base being made of wound porcupine quillwork. These headdress war bonnet roaches would have been worn across the top of the warrior’s head for battle or a special ceremony. The condition of this Central Plains roach is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this roach is 14 3/4" x 4".
Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses.
