For your consideration this lot includes Seven (7) Vintage Cabinet Card photographs from studios in early Montana statehood, circa 1890s. Cabinet cards feature the studio/photographer addresses with "Mont.", the initials for "Montana state": A. J. Lawson/Lawson, Billings, MT., Palais Studio, Butte, MT., H. D. Weenink, Dillon, MT., and Fink, Livingston, MT. Originally from the personal collection of renowned artifact dealer Jim Aplan of Piedmont, South Dakota and recipient of the coveted Governor’s Award for Historical Preservation in South Dakota and recipient of the coveted Governor’s Award for Historical Preservation in South Dakota. Cabinet cards, popular in the late 1800s, are easy to recognize because they are mounted on cardstock, often with an imprint of the photographer and location just below the photo. There are similar card-type photographs, such as the smaller carte-de-visite which was introduced in the 1850s, but if an old photo is about 4x6 in size then chances are it is a cabinet card. A style of photograph first introduced in 1863 by Windsor & Bridge in London, the cabinet card is a photographic print mounted on card stock. The Cabinet card got its name from its suitability for display in parlors especially in cabinets and was a popular medium for family portraits. Photographs are in amazing preserved condition, age tanning noted, minimal foxing. Slight fading also noted. Total approximate measurement is 4.25"W x 6.5"L for each card.
