Included in this lot is a Maynard single shot breech loading .52 Maynard second model carbine rifle. The Maynard carbine was a breech-loaded carbine used by cavalry in the American Civil War. The First Model was manufactured between 1858 and 1859. About 5,000 were made. The Second Model or Model 1863 was manufactured between 1863 and 1865. Over 20,000 were made. This model lacked the tape primer and stock patch box. This fine example of a civil war era carbine is chambered in the .52 Maynard caliber and utilizes a 20” barrel. The firearm utilizes a front dovetailed sight and three tier flip up rear sight. The receiver is stamped on the left “Edward Maynard Patentee May 27. 1851. Dec. 6. 1859.” and on the right “Manufactured by Mass. Arms. Co. Chicopee Falls.” Maynard and his financial backers founded the Maynard Arms Company in 1857, contracting the Massachusetts Arms Company to manufacture the new gun for civilian and military use. The guns, known as Maynards, were offered in .35 and .50 caliber, and could be purchased with interchangeable smoothbore shotgun barrels. The carbine is fit with a walnut straight grip stock with “N.F.” engraved in the left of the stock. The firearm has a dark gray patina indicative of its age. No Serial Number. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
