Deputy U.S. Marshal John Collins served in Cochise County, Arizona Territory, during a turbulent period in 1883, when outlaw activity along stage routes was a serious threat. In March of that year, Collins was riding guard on a Wells Fargo stagecoach carrying silver bullion when it was ambushed near Drew's Station, east of Tombstone. During the attempted robbery, Collins was shot and killed by outlaws believed to be part of the gang led by outlaw Bill Downing. His death underscored the dangers faced by lawmen tasked with protecting vital shipments through the lawless Arizona frontier. Collins was honored for his bravery and remains one of the many officers who gave their lives upholding order in the Old West. The condition of this Cochise County check is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage with some browning to the check consistent with age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition.
