Colt 1862 Police & Pocket Navy cartridge conversion revolver with ejector. This rare model was only made in a quantity of 6500 from 1873-1875. Barrel lengths were 4 ½” to 6 ½” and all had five shot cylinders. Made from left-over percussion revolvers, these scarce conversions were some of Colt’s earliest cartridge firing revolvers. With only 6500 made approximately 150 years ago, survival rates for this model are small, and those in fine condition have even smaller survival rates. This fine example with 4 ½” barrel in .38 Rim Fire caliber with serial number 7592 has all matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder and trigger guard. Even the barrel wedge has the matching number serial number. It is fitted with superb mellow antique one-piece ivory grips that are in perfect condition showing no cracks or chips. The nickel plating is very fine overall with only some light oxidation/peeling mainly on some portions of the left side of the barrel and bottom portions of the ejector housing along with a few small spots on the frame. There is still good nickel on the brass grip straps with minor peeling on the front strap and additional peeling on the back strap to reveal an uncleaned brass underneath (usually all the plating is gone from the grip straps). Additionally, the screw heads are generally excellent. The cylinder retains the original crisp and sharp roll marked stagecoach hold up scene The Colt barrel address is sharp as are the correct 1871 and 1872 patent markings on the left side of the frame. The upper left portion of the trigger guard retains the correct “36 CAL” marking from the earlier percussion manufacture parts. This example also has the desirable loading gate feature that many conversions lack, and it too retains excellent nickel. With ivory grips and nickel plating, this original Colt has a most attractive quality. Its rarity, overall condition and ivory stocks put it in a category suitable for the most advanced collection.
