For your bidding pleasure is this Deer Lodge Montana State Prison Horsehair Quirt. Horsehair braiding, in which horsehair is braided into functional pieces crafted with western decorations and designs, goes back to the late 1800s in penitentiary craft program throughout the western United States. Eventually, Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge became the best known, and the most prolific for horsehair goods. This quirt shows exceptional craftsmanship, giving spotless attention to detail with its fluid swirls of twisted rope design braided into accented chevron crown all braided into the handle of the quirt. This quirt mainly uses natural colored hair, however filling in the design is a decorative use of a light blue dyed horse hair. Braided into the neck of the core of the quirt again are a couple of swirling twisted rope designs with western diamonds cascading down the neck. The braided horsehair is finished with two Turk's Head Knots at either end, with braided hand loop and braided leather falls. These falls are expertly finished with another Turk's Head Knot on either fall with a plume of light blue horse hair surrounding a plume of natural; hair. The measurements of this quirt are 31" long.
