For your consideration in this lot is a custom saddle, crafted by the Connolly Brothers, in Billings, Montana between 1912, and 1929. The Connolly Brothers (Jack, Andrew, and Pat) learned the ways of expert tack making from their Irish immigrant father, John Connolly. In 1907, the brothers relocated from Minneapolis to Butte, Montana, where Connolly Bros opened their first harness shop, only to move once again to Billings in 1912. This saddle is an exceptional example of the brothers fine work, including full coverage floral tooling on the fenders, skirt, jockey, seat, pommel, and cantle. In addition to the intricate tooling, you can see the early "Connolly - Billings, MONT" stamp on the seat rise, as well as the skirt, just behind the cantle. The saddle is additionally adorned with copper hardware, heavy duty brass rigging dees, and double-stacked scalloped leather conchos. The saddle comes to us by way of the late Bud Chapman, renowned Western collector, out of Bozeman, MT. Overall, the early saddle shows good condition, especially for age. The saddle utilizes a 14 1/2" seat.
