There are two cartidges in this collection one a rifle cartridge and one a pistol cartridge. The Greathouse-Kuch Stage Station, located near White Oaks, New Mexico, played a brief but notable role in the legend of Billy the Kid. In December 1880, the Kid and his gang were cornered at the station by a posse led by Sheriff Pat Garrett. During a tense standoff, Billy negotiated with the posse, using hostages to secure his temporary escape. While Charlie Bowdre, one of Billy's companions, was killed, Billy managed to flee the station under the cover of darkness. This event added to his growing reputation for elusiveness and fueled the mythos that surrounded him in the final months before his capture and later escape from the Lincoln County jail. The condition of this pair of cartridges is preserved with some wear and weathering due to exposure and from being excavated with a bend in the pistol cartridge but otherwise shows a preserved condition. The measurements of these cartridges is 2 1/4" x 5/8" x 5/8" and 1 1/4" x 1/2". The collective weight of this pair of cartridges is 14.1g. EX-30
