This is an exceptional beaded late 19th century Blackfeet dag knife sheath paired with a dag knife. The sheath is comprised of Indian tanned buffalo hide over a parfleche rawhide lining being sinew sewn and covered in old glass trade seed beadwork. The sheath shows a classic Blackfoot designs and shape. The beadwork is sinew sewn and shows a fancy beaded edge around the entire outside edge. The body shows two large sections of beadwork and the bottom shows a diamond drop, a documented feature on other 19th Century beaded Blackfoot sheaths. The beadwork shows colors of greasy blue, cobalt, chalk white and semi-transparent red. The hide shows a slight stiffness and nice wear but overall presents very well. The sheath is paired with a “dag” style heavy knife with beaver tail or beaver back pattern. The knife shows a presentation style grade with German silver placards over striped walnut hardwood grip scales held together with copper rivets. The blade is thick and heavy with a dark color. The sheath and beaver back style of dag are very similar to other documented examples such as the Blackfeet Crow’s Foot (1836-1890) Dag Knife and Beaded Sheath (with the same pattern) which sold in 2013 at Cowan’s for $$65,000 and the sheath is incredibly similar to the Large Blackfoot Beaded Buffalo Hide sheath and double-edge dag knife circa 1870 from the C.P. Carberry Glacier Park collection and sold in 2016 at Skinners-Bonhams for $70,725. Truly a rare piece with interesting presentation style knife. Provenance: From the Ted Levy Santa Rosa, California collection. Sheath is 18.5”L without the belt strap by 4.25”W. Knife is 13”L.
