The lot features an unusual and scarce Ojibwa cut out and beaded stem and pipe bowl in nearly identical, rare form as the pipe in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection. The puzzle stem and pipe was collected from the Ojibwa (Chippewa) of Northern Minnesota and is from the Dale Harrison collection. The piece shows a carved wood stem with a puzzle or cut out pattern showing two long rectangular cutouts at the pipe connection side with all three of the sections being wrapped and beaded. The center section is wrapped in thick green trade clothe stroud wool which is trade thread sewn and shows rows of early glass trade seed beads in chalk white, greasy yellow and semi-transparent red. Under the clothe you can see a parfleche rawhide wrap and a bundle of hair (likely a medicine bundle of sorts). The outside sections are both wrapped in parfleche rawhide being sinew sewn and adorned with older glass trade seed beads in a banded design of chalk white, medium green and the center section being a “crazy” pattern with many different colors. Below the cutout at the center of the stem shows a wrap of parfleche rawhide which is sinew sewn and also covered in early old glass trade seed beadwork in a banded design with prominent greasy yellow beads. After the beadwork shows a section of six concho larger tacks with dark coloring, being metal tacks covered in a patina’d brass and near the bottom and at the top two more (four) tacks. The only other pipe in this exact form is the circa 1885 Ojibwa pipe bowl and stem in the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection accession number 2011.154.75a, b from the Ralph T. Coe Collection. This Met example shows the exact same oblong rectangle cutouts with wrapped center section having the wrapped rear section with banded beadwork and then six concho tacks with a dark wood color paired with a dark pipe bowl in catlinite, chlorite, lead / pewter. The pipe bowl with this lot shows a classic larger elbow “T” pipe carved from black Minnesota pipe stone known as steatite or chlorite inlaid with bands of artful lead / pewter bands at the smoking end with a pewter cap having six circular engraved spots on each side. The pipe bowl has a nice shiny polish with small scratches from use. Provenance: From the ex-Dale Harrison collection. The only known other example with this exact cutout design and beadwork known to exist outside of the 1885 Ojibwa pipe and stem in the Met Museum collection. The pipe and stem together measure 31.75”. Stem is 28”L by 2 7/8”W. Pipe bowl is 5.25” by 2.75” by 1.25”. A photo of the Met example is shown for reference.
