For your consideration are five F. J. Haynes Yellowstone National Park stereoview photos circa 1888 to 1900. Frank Jay Haynes, known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all who knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. The first stereoview is numbered "1065" and is titled, "Sulphur Mountain and Valley / Yellowstone National Park". The sides of the stereoview read, "Yellowstone National Park published by F. Jay Haynes". It shows a horse grazing in a grassy area with mountains in the background. The back of the card gives a short write up on the history of the park. The second is numbered "1906" and is titled, "Pillars of Hercules", a location located near the Columbia River in Oregon. The photo shows a railroad cutting between the two pillars of stone. The sides fo the stereoview read, "Northern Pacific Scenery. / F. Jay Haynes, Publisher, Fargo, D.T.". The third is numbered "4608" and is titled, "Great Falls 360 Feet". It shows the Great Falls of Yellowstone National Park from a distance down river. The sides of the stereoview read, "Yellowstone Park Scenery. / Haynes, Publisher St. Paul, Minn.". The fourth is numbered "4529" and is titled, "Riverside Geyser" showing Riverside Geyser erupting, putting off a large cloud of steam into the air. The sides of the sereoview read, "Yellowstone Park Scenery. / Haynes, Publisher, St. Paul, Minn.". The fifth and final stereoview is numbered, "4503" and is titled, "Liberty Cap Hotel and Valley" showing Liberty Cap Hotel in the background, while the foreground shows a large stone structure. The sides of the stereoview read, "Yellowstone Park Scenery. / Haynes, Publisher St. Paul, Minn". Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. The stereoviews show good condition overall with little wear present despite their age and use over the years. No obvious signs of damage are present. The largest measures 3 15/16" L x 7" W, while the others measure 3 1/2" L x 7" W.
