The lot features a set of fully beaded men’s belt, buckle and umbilical cord turtle fetish from the Assiniboine of Fort Peck in Northern Montana. The set is from the mid-to-late-1900's and was collected from a pawn shop in Fort Peck, Montana outside of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Reservation. The piece shows a fully beaded belt with umbilical cord turtle fetish and large fully beaded slide belt buckle, all in the same pattern. The set shows Indian Brain tanned hide, thick trade canvas and old five-point patriotic trade clothe lining covered in fully done geometric beadwork. The beadwork is done in all glass trade seed beads showing a chalk white background and accents in semi-transparent dark green, medium green, corn yellow, and dark red / maroon. The turtle is an umbilical fetish done in Indian Brain tanned hide covered on the front with petite glass trade seed beads in a four-corners pattern with the arms and legs represented by wound glass trade beads with wampum conch shells. The buckle shows Indian Brain tanned hide with thick trade canvas and five-point patriotic blue and white old trade clothe covered on the front with the impressive beadwork. The belt and buckle show a stepped diamond motif with Maltese cross at center and tipi triangle accents. The belt has Indian hide ties as well. This matches the men’s arm band cuffs and high top moccasins (moccasins and leggings) from the other near lots. Fort Peck was associated with Col. Campbell K. Peck, the partner of Elias H. Durfee from a trading firm of Durfee and Peck and in 1867 Abe Farwell constructed Fort Peck Trading Post along the Missouri River which created a monopoly in trade with the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes. Fort Peck served as the Indian Agency from 1873-1878, later being moved to Popular, Montana. Overall in well kept condition. Overall the piece measures 30.5-inches long beaded belt section with an additional 16-inches long hide ties, belt is approx.. 3.5-inche wide, with buckle and fetish hangs 9-inches long. Buckle by itself is 6-inches by 4.75-inches. Umbilical cord fetish is 5-inches long by 2.5-inches wide of hide and beadwork with an additional 4.5-inches long beaded fringe arms.
