Featured in this lot is this fossilized and painted Montana Occidentalis circa 1960-70s. This bison Occidentalis was a specie of bison that inhabited North America from 5000 to 10000 years ago. Evidence shows that the Great American Buffalo we know today evolved from the Occidentalis around 5000 years ago. The painted skull is thought to have been painted by the Montana Crow tribe circa 1960-70s and was harvested after a successful buffalo jump many years before. The piece shows the top of the skull in good condition with the large, long horns protruding out of the sides. The jaw bone portion has been broken off completely. The painting shows two American Bald Eagles flying off of the horns towards the center of the skull with yellow star shapes in their wings. The center shows a bison skull painted on the background while a Native American man wearing a buffalo headdress holds a small bison skull in front of his chest. The painting shows colors of red, blue, white, yellow, black, grey and brown throughout. The skull shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years. No major signs of damage are noted. The skull measures 10 7/8" L x 21 3/4" W x 7 5/8" H and weighs 8 pounds and 4 ounces.
