This is an excellent set of 19th Century, fully top beaded, polychrome parfleche, hard sole and hide moccasins from the Gros Ventre Native American Indians of Northern Montana. The set shows an Indian tanned hide construction with petit cen glass trade seed beads being sinew sewn, a medium hold over hide and red stroud trade cloth ankle, and hard parfleche rawhide soles, which are remnants of polychrome painted parfleche from an envelope. The set shows amazing, tight beadwork with little bead loss and colors of sky padre blue, faceted brass, medium green, greasy rose and a border of red and black. The ankle shows a nice, scalloped edge and the set has the original hide tie straps. The outside of the hide has a nice orange, ocher mineral pigment dyed color. The moccasins show the correct patina and age to be from the 19th century, including a fine, worn foot print on the sole. The Gros Ventre Indian tribe (also referred to as the A'ani, A'aninin, Haaninin, and Atisina) are an Algonquian speaking people from the North Central Montana region. The Gros Ventres migrated to Montana in the 18th Century due to pressure from the Ojibwe Indians. The moccasins measure 6"L overall with a sole that is approximately 2 5/8" across. The heel is 3.54"H when pulled high, but most likely was folded over. 1870-1880's
