Featured in this lot is this Hamely & Co. Pendelton, Ore. saddle and saddle bags circa 1910-1920. The saddle features a wonderfully and professionally crafted leather and wooden tree construction that shows nickel monel stirrups. The custom saddle also shows tooling consistent with the professionalism of Hamely & Co. quality and shows custom made saddle bags on the back of the skirt with beautiful tooling of floral decorations custom fitted to the saddle. The saddle is marked as follows: JBA - 6077 9476 - and shows the makers mark (Hamely & Co. Pendelton, Ore.). Hamley & Co., also known as Hamley Saddlery, is one of the most iconic and respected saddlery businesses in the American West. Established in the late 19th century, the company has a rich history and is known for its high-quality craftsmanship, particularly in the production of saddles, bridles, and other Western tack. The Hamley family history goes back many generations to Cornwall, England, where the trade of saddle and leather craftsmanship had been passed down through many generations of Hamleys. The American history of the Hamleys began in 1850, when William Hamley moved his family from England to Rupon, Wisconsin, where he opened a small leather goods store. In 1905, J.J. relocated to Pendleton, Oregon and set up shop on the Oregon Trail in the same building that exists to this day. Hamley was known as a harness and saddle maker, but the business soon developed around its saddles and became known throughout the west as the maker of "the finest saddles man could ride". The condition of this Hamley Saddlery Co. saddle is well preserved with with some wear and patina adorned to the saddle consistent with its age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The overall measurements of this saddle is 32" x 17" x 23 1/2" and the seat size is 12". The collective weight of this saddle is 35lb 10oz.
