Featured in this lot is this large Japanese Satsuma gilt and glazed ceramic egg. The egg features a wonderfully and professionally crafted yellowish earthenware construction that features glazed design with landscape scenes that include colourful birds with landscape design of cherry blossoms and bonsai trees with floral shrubbery shown on the back of two wagon carts. The Satsuma egg includes two scenes on opposite sides of the walling. The egg is marked 'Satsuma' and is believed to be a mid century piece due to the English nature of the hallmark. The egg is shown mounted on a wooden base that shows some chipping to the black paint but otherwise shows consistent condition and design. The typical Satsuma ware we most of the time come into contact with is a yellowish earthenware usually decorated with a minute decoration with Japanese figures, expressive faces or detailed oriental landscapes, or sometimes embellished with vivid dragons in relief. This ware is in fact an export product specifically designed in the mid 19th century to cater to the western export market. The condition of this large Satsuma egg is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The wood base has numerous scuffing noted. The Satsuma egg can stand without the stand. The measurements of this egg is 10.75"W x 15.75"H, on the stand 10.75"W x 16.75"H
