The piece shows a forged metal war axe tomahawk head with bear paw cutout on a beaded hide leather clothe covered handle from Lakota Sioux Indian John Young Buck. John Young Buck was born in 1947 and was known to have works from the circa 1960-2000’s with this likely being from the 20th Century. The head has a steel round eyelet hold with a typical western blade axe head with blacksmith forge hammer marks and a cutout of a bear paw with claws at the center. The wood handle has a hide leather wrapped gasket holding the head on and is covered in hide leather and red stroud trade clothe showing glass trade beadwork of red, white and black with hand cut fringes, wrapped gripping handle and drop of red stroud trade clothe with brass covered metal trade tacks in a bear paw claw pattern and fringes at the bottom as well as rolled metal jingle cones. The piece displays very well and is from a Ranch in Red Lodge, Montana. Measures overall 37”L including the drop with the head being 8 1/8” L by 4 7/8” across the blade edge.
