Featured in this lot is this rare and beautifully bound 1791 edition of "Les Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon", authored by Jean de La Fontaine and published in Paris by Defer de Maisonneuve, with printing by P. Fr. Didot Jeune. This edition is renowned for its stipple-engraved color plates after M. Schall, showcasing the fine color printing techniques emerging in late 18th-century France. "Les Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon" originally written in 1669, is La Fontaine's only prose work that combines mythology, philosophy, and literary grace. It depicts the mythical story of Psyche, a mortal princess, and her romantic relationship with Cupid, the god of desire. This edition is bound in full red calf leather and gilt-stamped with the coat of arms of the Marquis de Villeneuve Vence, a peer of France, possibly implying an aristocratic origin. The spine has raised bands and ornate gold lettering and decorations, while the edges of the pages are gilt trimmed. It shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. The interior pages are in good readable condition but show foxing and slight staining from its very old age. It measures 13 1/2" L x 10 1/2" W x 1" D and weighs 3 pounds and 10 ounces.
