This is an original signed oil painting by Maude Irvine Kerns (American, 1876-1965) signed and titled “Sketch From Gauguin Tahitian Mts.” and dated 1940. Maude Irvine Kerns (1876 - 1965), was an American artist and art educator, known for her avant-garde paintings. Her works were exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum, National Gallery of Art, and the Salon des Realites Nouvelles and earned Kerns considerable notoriety among the abstract art movement in New York. From the 1930s through the 1950s, Kerns made a name for herself in the world of abstract art, painting in what was called at the time the "non-objective" art movement, being widely known for modernist landscapes. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and the Seattle Art Museum, among others, and is owned by the Microsoft Corporation and many private collectors. The original painting by Paul Gauguin, "Tahitian mountains" oil on canvas, was painted in 1893; he died in 1903. This original oil on canvas by Maude I. Kerns is a faithful representation of Gauguin's piece. The oil painting is in good overall condition, a small tear is note at center left, no other obvious damage noted. The dark hardwood frame is in good overall condition, scuffing exhibited on edges. Visible art measures 15.5"W x 19.5"L, frame is 19.5"W x 23.5"L. The Kerns signature is consistent with other authentic pieces.
