For bidding in this lot is a pair of Miles City Saddlery tooled wooly chaps. The Miles City Saddelry was created in 1909, when C. E. Coggshall sold his business to Frank Jelinek, Bert Coleman, and Clem Kathman for approximately $9,500. Kathman, the only leather worker of the trio, had been Coggshalls shop foreman. The zenith of their manufacturing era spanned the years 1910-1919, similar to Al. Furstnow Saddlery, its major competitor in Miles City. The wooly chaps were popular in that time for their warmth, though they often deteriorated due to bugs chewing or nesting in the fur. For that reason, wooly chaps had a short run in popularity. The chaps show a custom basket weave tooled belt, and are stamped with the iconic "Miles City Saddlery - Maker - Miles City. MONT." makers mark. The chaps are believed to originate from the first decade of business, between 1909-1919. Each chap measures 36" x 12" when they are buckled closed.
