Presented in this lot is a Vintage American Plains Bison Buffalo Tanned Hide. A familiar icon of the American West, the Plains bison, also commonly called buffalo, once numbered in the tens of millions and roamed North America in nomadic herds. Bison and Indigenous Peoples have had a critical relationship for generations, with the bison being a central figure in American Indian spirituality. However, by the late 1800s, buffalo were nearly became extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and the introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle. Recovery efforts have brought about the resurgence of the mighty animal. Today, tribe treaty hunts and private authorized hunts are used to help manage herds around Montana areas outside Yellowstone National Park. This Plains Bison Buffalo hide has soft and coarse fur, with some stiff areas, along with wear through spots, cracks and loss of fur on the face. The piece has a deep original patina and is preserved condition overall. Measures overall 112"W x 110"L. Weight is 24lb.
