Presented in this lot is this Vintage Navajo Harvey Begay Sterling Silver Overlay Coral Chip Inlay Cuff Bracelet, signed, circa 1950's to 1960s. The bracelet features a wonderfully and professionally crafted sterling silver overlay and coral chip inlay construction within a gila monster/rattlesnake design, stamped rattlesnake "teeth" imagery noted throughout. Harvey Begay (1938-2009) grew up surrounded by a very talented family and learned from the best silversmiths of his generation. Harvey was among the first jewelers to use lost-wax designs with extreme details and create a high-end line of hand-fabricated, one-of-a-kind museum pieces. Over the years, he evolved as a high-end and sophisticated jeweler, exemplifying wearable art. Harvey’s distinct hallmark is “HB” and his work has been featured in numerous publications and museum shows nationwide. The Gila Monster is one of the most significant symbols of healing and restoration in Navajo culture. In myth, it can dismember itself and be restored to its full form, representing the power to bring back life and health. In Navajo (Diné) culture, the rattlesnake is a powerful symbol associated with speed, lightning, and electrical energy, and is considered a sacred, protective being. It represents a connection between the earth and sky, and its image appears in ceremonies and sand paintings. The symbol holds a dual meaning, embodying both positive power and potential danger depending on human interaction. The art of chip inlay is largely credited to Tommy Singer and the Singer family, who were mid-century jewelry artisans in the Navajo tribe, and as they developed and perfected the craft, they shared the technique with their fellow members. In the many decades since, the technique has spread and been adopted by many artisans. This cuff bracelet has a stunning appearance, the bright finish sterling silver serving to accentuate the coral chip mosaic colouring. The underside is stamped, "HB". Measures 6.75" circumference including 1" opening. Weight is 20.5 grams.
