Included in this lot are Antique Late 19th Century Linotype Lead Type from Illinois Type Foundry Co., L. Johnson Type Foundry, and A. Zeese & Co., circa 1884 to 1897. Linotype typesetting machine by which characters are cast in type metal as a complete line rather than as individual characters as on the Monotype typesetting machine. It was patented in the United States in 1884 by Ottmar Mergenthaler. These three foundries, from Chicago, Philadelphia and New York City respectively, were leaders in the early years of the linotype machine's takeover of newspaper, magazine and poster publishing, which continued in use into the 1980s when it was largely replaced by phototypesetting and digital typesetting. The late Victorian Era featured the Aesthetic Movement that valued the appearance of literature, music, fonts and the arts over their functions. These type faces display flourish and styles that mirrored the desires of the aesthetic movement. The type is in very fine condition, no marring observed. Largest type measures 1.75"W x 1.75"L x .875"D, combined weight is 1lb, 12oz.
