Offered in this lot are Vintage Hand-made Bone Dice (15), circa 19th century. Dice these days are mostly made out cellulose and other types of plastics, but plastic wasn’t always available. Precursors to modern dice were made from the bones of domesticated animals, like oxen and sheep. These knucklebones were mostly cube-shaped. The cube-shaped d6 dice style that is common today originated in China around 600 B.C. and was introduced to Europe by the explorer Marco Polo in the 1300s. Around the year AD 1400, the numbering system for dice became standardized with the “sevens” system. These dice display the imprecise manner in which they were hand-made as the pips (dots) don't align perfectly unlike modern manufactured dice which are machined out of blocks of plastic and plastic injection molding. These dice measure .478" on average each, combined weight is 51.1 grams.
