Featured in this lot is a Sioux-Style Northern Plains Coyote Teeth & Glass Trade Bead Necklace, circa late 1800s - early 1900s. Necklace features leather strung Hudson's Bay White Heart Red glass beads and Russian cobalt barrel beads separating 26 Coyote teeth. The coyote is one of the most well-known symbols in Native American culture, representing a creator god, a spirit, and a significant ancestor. To wear a coyote symbol is to encourage one's own intelligence and craftiness. Also known as "Cornaline D'Allepo" beads, Hudson's Bay white heart beads were traded extensively throughout North America from the earliest times. Blue Russians is the name given to the beautiful Cobalt Blue, hand faceted, tubular glass trade beads originally traded by the Russians to the Alaska Natives in exchange for Sea Otter pelts or anything else they might want. The beads were a desirable form of currency, similar to the Wampum of the far north and were also traded in Canada and the Great Lakes region. This impressive necklace is a wonderful example of the artistry of the Northern Plains Native American peoples. The necklace is displayed in a Ryker glass case on a felt backing. The condition of this necklace is good with with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this necklace from end to end is 14", circumference is 29". Ryker case measures 12.25"W x 16.25"L x .75"D, weight is 2lb.
