Offered in this lot are two strands of Late 1800's "Lewis and Clark" trade beads. The beads are black oblong with white feathering and red, white, and blue twining. The beads are as long as 1 1/8" or as small as 3/8"; all of the beads are 3/8"-1/2" wide. The one necklace is strung on raffia and has 30 beads on it and measures 30". The small necklace is strung on twine and measures 15". There are 15 beads on this necklace. All of these beads are dated from the late 1800's and are known as "Lewis and Clark" beads, though they are not the type of beads that were taken on the expedition, so how this style beads got that name is not known. These beads were Venetian made and were made in many colors, but the black was only found in the U.S. These beads are in fair condition, with damage to be expected with their 200+ year age.
