For your consideration is an Signed Pierre Jules Mene, "After The Scottish Hunt", aka "La Chasse en Écosse" or "La Prise du Renard". This impressive bronze depicts a Scottish hunting scene with a Scottish hunter in traditional attire holding up a fox next to his horse and dogs. Bronze is signed "P. J. Mêne". Considered one of Mêne's most ambitious Scottish-inspired works, reflecting the influence of Edwin Landseer. Pierre Jules Mêne (1810–1879) was a renowned French sculptor and a pioneer of the Animalier school, a 19th-century movement dedicated to the realistic portrayal of animals. He is widely considered the most successful and prolific animal sculptor of his era. Mêne's work is characterized by remarkable naturalism and anatomical precision, often capturing animals in "fleeting moments" of movement. He specialized in small-scale domestic animals, particularly horses and dogs. Unlike some contemporaries, he rarely sculpted "big game" like lions or tigers. Mêne was unique among artists in establishing his own foundry in 1837 where he personally oversaw the casting of his bronzes to ensure the highest quality. His works can be seen at The Louvre Museum (Paris, France), National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.) and The Art Institute of Chicago The bronze, sitting on a marble base, is in very nice condition, rich patina observed throughout. Measures 8.75"W x 15.625"L x 12"H, weight is 37lb, 6oz.
