Featured in this lot are Rare Original Photographs by F. Jay Haynes of Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory, 1872. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. The albumen photographs are signed on the reverse, "1872 On top of the hill John Kleinschmidt Mandan, N. Dak.". The albumen and silver gelatin enlargements show the Gatling Gun Battery and the Blockhouse at Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory (located in modern day Mandan, North Dakota). Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921), known as F. Jay or "the Professor" to almost all who knew him, was the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park. He was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the Northwestern United States. The photographs are in very good preserved condition for being over 150 years old, the albumen photographs measure 4.5"W x 5.5"L each, silver gelatin enlargements are 8"W x 10"L each.
