Presented in this lot is an Original United War Work Campaign WW1 Poster, circa 1918. The United War Work Campaign was a one-week fundraising effort during World War I which included the YMCA, the YWCA, the Knights of Columbus, the Jewish Welfare Board, the War Camp Community Board, the American Library Association, and the Salvation Army to raise money for the war. World War I was the first time in American history that women were officially part of the military and government agencies. The US Army hired women to serve as telephone operators overseas, as this poster shows. When WWI broke out, the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) was the first organization to send female administrative workers overseas to participate in the War Effort. The colour poster features a female switchboard operator with troops marching in the background. The slogan, "Back our girls over there United War Work Campaign", with the YWCA logo, is at the bottom of the poster. The artist's name is seen at the bottom of the illustration, on the side of the desk. Clarence Underwood (1871-1929) was an American painter and illustrator. This colour WWI poster is in good overall condition, very slight tears on the borders, age tanning observed, bottom right corner creased. Measures 21"W x 28"L.
