This is an original E.S. Curtis (American 1868-1952) photogravure titled, "Return with Boughs - Cheyenne" and dated circa 1911. The piece has been printed on the correct Japanese Vellum (a calfskin or goat skin) paper. Edward S. Curtis favored three types of handmade papers for his photogravures: Japanese Vellum, Dutch "Van Gelder" and Japanese Tissue (also known as Indian Proof Paper). This example is marked on the front, "RETURN WITH BOUGHS - CHEYENNE / From Copyright Photograph 1911 by E.S. Curtis" on the front and ia hand written in graphite on the back "E17 / VELLUM". The piece shows four Cheyenne Native American Indians on horseback (and the rear of a fourth at the left most extreme edge of the piece). The center most figure shows what appears to be a man wearing a Cheyenne hide mask.
