This lot includes the "Roughing It Series" books by Charles Austin Fosdick (1842-1915), better known by his nom de plume Harry Castlemon, a prolific writer of juvenile stories and novels, intended mainly for boys. Castlemon became the most-read author for boys in the post-Civil War era, the golden age of children's literature. "George in Camp, or, Life on the Plains", "George at the Wheel, or, Life in the Plot-house" and, " George at the Fort, or, Life Among the Soldiers" were written from the point of view of a boy character, George Ackerman, introduced in Castlemon's earlier series, "Boy Trapper Series". Castlemon often drew on his experiences serving in the Union Navy during the U.S. Civil War for inspiration. These illustrated silver gilt and cloth debossed hardcovered books are in good overall conditions, silver gilt on covers and spines still fairly visible, some spine separation noted for all three books. Intact pages with slight marring damage noted within all three consisting of bent or tattered edges, last page of "George at the Fort" is torn yet attached. Age Tanning and slight foxing also noted throughout. No other obvious marring noted. Books each measure 5"W x 7.2"L x 1"D approximately.
