For your consideration is this original, W.H. Jackson Photo Company photo titled, "A Dug Out" taken in 1889. William Henry Jackson (1843-1922) was a member of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 which was an extensive exploration of the Yellowstone Region. It was Jackson's photographs of the expedition that led to Congress establishing Yellowstone as the first national park. This is a wonderful depiction of Jackson's early works in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. This photo shows a man sitting in the door way of his dug out cabin in the side of a hill as he smokes his tobacco pipe. Three entrances can be seen throughout the dug out, reinforced with large wood logs. The bottom of the photo is marked reading, "3630 A Dug Out / The W.H. Jackson Photo Co. / Denver, Colo.". The back is marked reading, "W.H. Jackson Photography and Publishing Co. / Denver, Col.". It shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 5" L x 8" W and weighs under 6 ounces.
