For your consideration are two William H. Jackson & Company photos of the Windsor Hotel in Denver, taken in the late 1880s / early 1890s. The Windsor Hotel, located at the northeast corner of 18th and Larimer, was Denver's first true luxury hotel when it opened in 1880. With its five-story structure and 400 guestrooms, city boosters hailed the hotel as a symbol of the city's bright future. Many local and national figures were entertained here, but as with many other luxury downtown hotels of its size, changes in transportation, such as the decline of traffic at downtown rail depots and the rise of interstate hotels, made maintaining such a lavish building unfeasible, and the hotel was eventually demolished and replaced with a parking lot in 1960, followed by a modern high-rise office building. The photos are nearly identical, taken only a year or two apart from approximately the same location. They show the same corner of the building with one photo showing a small wood cart and the other showing a lone man standing on the corner. The first is marked reading, "Denver Series / W.H. Jackson & Co., Denver, Colorado / 131. Windsor Hotel, Denver". The back is marked as well with a write-up on the city of Denver. The second photo is marked reading, "Photographed And Published W.H. Jackson Denver, Colo. / 88. Windsor Hotel Denver". The photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. They measure 4" L x 7" W and have a collective weight of under 6 ounces.
