For bidding in this lot is a Winchester Model 1901 lever action shotgun, chambered for 10 gauge. The shotgun originates from manufacture year 1907. The Model 1901 shotgun was designed by the famed John Browning, and is based off of the original 1887 shotgun. By 1900 it was soon realized that the action on the M1887 was not strong enough to handle early smokeless powder shotshells, and so a redesign resulted in the stronger Winchester Model 1901, 10-gauge only, to handle the advent of the more powerful smokeless powder. A 12-gauge chambering was not offered, as Winchester did not want the Model 1901 to compete with their successful 12-gauge Model 1897 pump-action shotgun. Overall, the shotgun shows good mechanical and aesthetic condition, with a good action, and a healthy bore. The shotgun shows nice even wear to the blueing, and the walnut fixtures show fair condition, with some handling marks, and heavy dents. The shotgun qualifies as a Curio & Relic Shotgun, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 68341.
