Presented in this lot is a First Edition of "The Tanner Boy And How He Became Lieutenant General" by Major Penniman, 1864, Roberts Brothers, publishers, Boston. a biography written by Major Penniman that tells the story of a young boy named John Rawlins who grew up in poverty in Galena, Illinois. Despite his humble beginnings, Rawlins was determined to succeed and worked hard to achieve his goals. He became an apprentice to a tanner, and through his hard work and dedication, he was able to become a successful businessman.However, Rawlins' true passion was the military, and he eventually joined the Union Army during the Civil War. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a trusted aide to General Ulysses S. Grant. Rawlins played a crucial role in the Union's victory at Vicksburg and was eventually promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.Throughout the book, Penniman explores Rawlins' life and career, providing insight into the challenges he faced and the sacrifices he made to achieve success. The book is a fascinating look at a little-known figure in American history and is sure to be of interest to anyone interested in the Civil War or the history of the United States military. The green cloth bound gold gilt illustrated textured hardcover is in good condition overall, scuffing noted to cover edges, gilt fading. Intact pages exhibit age tanning, foxing and top page scuffing. Measures 4.5"W x 7"L x 1.25"D, weight 14oz.
