Included in this lot is this Edition of "Forms and Use Of Blanks" by R. W. Hent, 1877, A. L. Bancroft And Company publishers, San Francisco. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. This law book was owned by a Tombstone, Arizona Territory miner, Sam A. Pearson, from 1882-1884. Sam's signature is on the inside front cover. Founded after the discovery of silver ore in 1877, Tombstone grew and grew as word got out from approximately 100 residents to over 10, 000 by 1881. As the fastest growing boomtown in the American Southwest, the silver industry and attendant wealth attracted many professionals and merchants. One of the byproducts of the vast riches being produced, lawsuits became very prevalent. Between 1880 and 1885 the courts were clogged with many cases, often about land claims and properties. As a result lawyers began to settle in Tombstone and became even wealthier than the miners and those who financed the mining. In addition, because many of the lawsuits required expert analysis of the underground, many geologists and engineers found employment in Tombstone and settled there as well. Arizona’s first major conflict between labor and management occurred in 1884 at Tombstone. In 1884, mine owners at the Contention and Grand Central mines cut wages, prompting miners to form the Tombstone Miners' Union and strike. The strike lasted for four months, highlighting the early struggles of organized labor in Arizona's mining industry. "Forms and Use Of Blanks: being over one thousand forms in ordinary legal and business transactions, and including over five hundred law and commercial blanks filled up.
