Featured in this lot is an Original WWI Victory Liberty Loan War Bond Poster, circa 1917-1918. Featuring the artistry of Joseph Pennell, the poster depicts an imaginary scene of biplanes flying above a partially destroyed Statue of Liberty, its head in the water with an eagle standing above it on the Liberty Island shoreline and New York City in flames, whilst a submarine is leaving New York Harbour. Sunken ships, presumably torpedoed, are seen in the waters behind and adjacent to the island. The whole image was done in red ink, most likely to inflame the passions and emotions of US citizens. Joseph Pennell was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines. A prolific artist, he spent most of his working life in Europe, and developed an interest in landmarks, landscapes, and industrial scenes around the world. The war bond slogan"THAT LIBERTY SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH", and, "BUY LIBERTY BONDS" "Fourth Liberty Loan" are printed at the bottom of the poster, below the colour image. "Joseph Pennell, DEL.," and "ALCO-GRAVURE, Inc., NY" are printed immediately below the image. Alco-Gravure was a printing company that specialized in printing gravure sections for over thirty newspapers. This war bond poster is in good overall condition, tears noted along borders, age tanning exhibited.
