Featured in this lot are six glass negative photos taken in and around Polson, Montana by C. Owen Smithers circa Early 20th century. These negatives were produced by coating glass plates with a light-sensitive emulsion, which was then exposed to record photographic images. The subject was photographed using a large-format camera and relatively long exposure times, which frequently necessitated the subject holding still for prolonged periods of time. Following chemical development of the exposed glass plate, a negative image with reversed light and dark tones was produced. Glass negatives were favored by professional photographers of the era, especially for large-format photography, due to their high resolution and exceptional detail. The first two glass slides in this collection are identical and show a ferry about to dock near the shore to load or unload passengers. Around the bank are workers doing their jobs and cows grazing near the water. Three horse drawn wagons can bee seen around the shore and one automobile can be seen in the center of the photo. The third glass negative slide shows a shore scene with various washed up branches sitting on the shoreline. In the distance is a small island covered in trees. The fourth slide shows the same as the third, but the photo is taken from a different perspective. The fifth slide shows a similar scene to the third and fourth, but is taken from a wooded area. The sixth and final glass negative slide shows a beautiful and cool cabin situated in the woods near the Polson area. The glass negative slides show good condition overall with wear present from their age and use over the years. Scratches present and fading as well. No major signs of damage is noted. The glass slides measure from 5 1/2" L x 3 1/4" W to 5" L x 3 1/2" W and have a collective weight of 10 ounces. Provenance: From the C. Owen Smithers Collection.
